About Moore's Corner Church

Welcome to Moore's Corner Church

Moore's Corner Church is a Non-Denominational Church that is committed to the preaching and teaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our church was founded in 1896 by two students of the famous Evangelist D.L. Moody. We seek to encourage and edify the Body of Christ through the preaching of God's Word and through the ministries of the local church.

A Brief History of Moore’s Corner Church

MCC early 1900’sBeginning on Sunday, August 11th, 1895, two weeks of evangelistic meetings were held in the school building in Moore's Corner (Leverett MA). The services were so well received they continued into the autumn. Two of the men involved in leading the meetings, John C. Wightman & William S. Anderson went on to become the first two Pastors of Moore's Corner Church.

The church was officially established on July 8th 1896 under Pastor Wightman who originally came from Scotland and was a protégé of Evangelist D.L. Moody. The Charter members of the church were as follows: Francis Simeon Colton, John Wesley Watson, Mrs. Lottie (Perkins) Watson, Merritt Edward Richardson, Mrs. Sophie (Gardner) Briggs, Horace Edgar Waterman, Mrs. Etta (Baker) Waterman, Mrs. Effie Rosella Waterman, Mrs. Abbie S. Pike, James Henry Dodge, Mrs. Stella (Briggs) Dodge, Mervin Ezra Dodge, Orrin Maynard, Miss Amy Florence Maynard, George Willard Waterman, Mrs. Mary (Joslyn) Waterman, Miss Mary Lottie Waterman, Miss Daisy Luella Waterman, Herbert Lorin Maynard, Mrs. Lillian (Waterman) Maynard, Danford Jerome Waterman, Augustus Mason Ball, Mrs. Helen (Gardner) Ball, Mrs. Nellie (Blanchard) Bourne and Miss Ethelyn Dutcher.

The thoughts of the congregation soon turned to the possibility of a church building. On May 7th 1897, a committee was formed to investigate the idea of a building (the estimated cost was $2,500). The property upon which the church was built was donated by Mr. John Watson.

The first anniversary of the Church took place on the property, under a tent, because the building was not yet finished. The building was officially dedicated on September 21st, 1898. The original name of the church was Moores Corner Congregational Church ("Congregational" was dropped after the church left the Congregationalist Denomination during the middle part of the 20th century).

Rev. William S. Anderson was installed as the second Pastor in 1901, he was also the founder of Camp Anderson (now known as Pinebrook Camp in Shutesbury). The Rev. C.I. Scofield was the keynote speaker at the fifth anniversary service on July 8th 1901, his text was Judges 1:15.

Rev. Arthur Truesdell became the third Pastor in 1905 and was the longest serving Pastor up until the ministry of Rev. Larry G. Riddle who served the Church for 36 years.

Moores Corner Church has had only eleven pastors in its 120+ year history – John C. Wightman (1895-1900), William S. Anderson (1901-1905), Arthur Truesdell (1905-1927 & 1943-1954), S.A. Caldwell (1927-1930), Edmund L. Blackmer (1930-1936), Stanley M. Camp (1937-1943), Wallace Bradley (1954-1955), Charles Hodgman Jr. (1955-1959), William Floge (1960-1978), Larry G. Riddle (1978-2014) and Michael A. Grant (2014-Present).
